Why EBikes Are the Perfect Exercise for Older People

We’re always told the importance of keeping active throughout our life – and as we get older that doesn’t change. If anything, it becomes more important as exercise brings so many benefits that can contribute to us staying independent for longer. It can improve our strength, balance and overall mood, giving us more energy and improving our cognitive function. Doing the right kind of exercise on a regular basis can even help to prevent or delay conditions such as diabetes, osteoporosis and heart disease.

However, as we get older we may need to modify the type of exercise we do ensure it does us more good than harm.

 

What kind of exercise do we need?

In addition to doing muscle strengthening exercise twice a week, the NHS recommends that adults who are 65 and over should do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity, if you are already active. Or you can do a combination of the two.

 

Walk don’t run

Brisk walking is of course the easiest way to get started if you’re looking to build up an initial level of fitness with some moderate activity. As opposed to running, which can be hard on the joints, walking makes excellent, low impact exercise. However, if it’s something you do on a regular basis you’re likely to have exhausted all your local routes, and boredom is a sure fire path to giving up!

 

Begin a new cycle

Cycling opens up a whole new world of options to you. Perfect for pops to the shop, visiting friends and family or exploring local greenspaces that are just out of reach on foot. Cycling is impact-free, meaning it’s gentle on your joints, and provides excellent cardiovascular exercise at the pace you set for yourself. The great news is that cycling can be classed as both moderate and vigorous exercise, depending on the pace you go at. Aim for 20-30 minutes of moderate exercise a day to begin with and work up to vigorous should you want to push yourself further.

 

The future is electric

Obviously with cycling you can go so much further than on foot. But for many older people (and younger people too!), the thought of being reliant on pedalling their way everywhere can be a little intimidating. The last thing you want to do is pedal somewhere, spend the day there, then not have enough energy to cycle back home. Or to plan to go somewhere and have it end up being just a bit too far for you. The beauty of ebikes is in the battery. With an electric bike, you can take it easy whenever your legs need a break, and let the battery kick in for a little while. It means you need never get too tired, without having to compromise on where you want to go.
